Cost of Living in Phuket Thailand
Since leaving America in 2007 to come to live and work in Phuket Thailand, the question we get asked most is "How much does it cost to live here?"
And the answer is, "It really depends". It depends on a number of factors such as:
- What size accommodation do you need?
- Do you need to live near the beach?
- Do you have kids that need to go to school?
- Will you cook, eat locally, or want to dine out at restaurants?
- Will you want to go out for drinks on a regular basis?
- How do you plan to get around?

Accommodation
It is safe to say that accommodation is likely to be the biggest expense for anyone moving to Phuket Thailand. Rental prices for properties in the high season (Dec-Apr) can be expensive and need to be locked in early with a rental contract. Rental prices for properties in the low season (May-Nov) tend to be less expensive and renters have more choices. Like most beach destinations, the closer you are to the beach, the more it costs.
In Phuket, utilities are usually not included in the long-term rental price of a property, so budget accordingly.
Groceries
Staple foods tend to be inexpensive. Phuket is attached to the mainland by a bridge and the cost of vegetables, fruits, meats, rice, pasta, and other necessities can be found at local outdoor markets, on food carts, and in grocery stores at very reasonable prices. Seafood is plentiful and extremely reasonable.
Local outdoor markets will be set up in the same area 2-3 days a week with fresh fruits and vegetables, seafood, and meats at unbelievably low prices. Phuket also has such grocery stores as Maco, Lotus, BigC, VillaMart, and Central all with a wide selection of groceries at fair prices.
Transportation
Many who live on the island full-time will purchase a car or a scooter. A compact car in Phuket Thailand will cost around $15k USD (new) and a scooter will cost around $1,500 USD (new). Insurance, repairs, and upkeep are inexpensive in Thailand.
