Thailand Introduces a 5-Year Digital Nomad Visa

Thailand has long been a dream destination for travelers, offering a perfect blend of sun-kissed beaches and vibrant city life, with Bangkok’s energy to match its tranquil coastlines. Thanks to its tropical climate, Thailand has always been a favorite holiday escape, but now it’s also a top choice for digital nomads.

With the launch of the new ‘Destination Thailand Visa’ (DTV) introduced in 2024, remote workers can now stay in the country for up to five years. This follows the lead of other popular destinations like Malaysia and Indonesia, which are embracing hybrid work models by offering similar visa schemes.

Previously, digital nomads could only stay in Thailand on tourist visas for up to 60 days, or they had to meet strict financial criteria to qualify for the challenging-to-obtain Long Term Residence Visa. The new DTV offers a major upgrade, making Thailand an even more attractive destination for remote work.

In addition to supporting Thailand’s efforts to revive tourism and boost its economy, the DTV is one of the most generous digital nomad visas available worldwide. Ready to work in paradise? Here’s everything you need to know about Thailand’s new digital nomad visa.

Who can apply for Thailand’s Digital Nomad Visa?

To qualify, applicants must be self-employed or work remotely for a company based outside of Thailand. You also need to be at least 20 years old. In a unique twist, the DTV is not just for freelancers or remote workers; it’s also open to those pursuing cultural activities, like cooking classes or training in muay Thai (traditional Thai boxing).

How long will the visa last?

The DTV allows you to stay in Thailand for up to five years. However, you’ll need to leave and reenter the country every 180 days. Each reentry comes with a small fee of around $270 (£212.20).

What is the minimum income requirement?

Unlike previous long-term visas that had a high minimum income requirement of $80,000 (£62,850), the new DTV offers more flexibility. Applicants can now qualify with savings of at least 500,000 Thai baht (roughly $13,600 or £10,684).

What other requirements are there?

In addition to meeting the income or savings criteria, applicants cannot be employed by a Thai-based company. You’ll also need to pay an application fee of 10,000 Thai baht (approximately $270 or £212.20).

How to apply for Thailand’s Digital Nomad Visa

Depending on your nationality and location, you might be able to apply online through Thailand’s official e-visa website. Eligible countries for online applications include the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, and most European nations. If your country is not listed, you’ll need to visit your local Thai embassy to submit your application. Check the e-visa website for more details: https://thaievisa.go.th/

Thailand’s new visa program presents an exciting opportunity for remote workers and cultural explorers alike. Whether you’re looking to combine work with adventure or pursue a new passion, this visa could make your dream of living and working in Thailand a reality.
